Electronics Projects


Below are some of the electronics projects we have done in the past:


 

Electronic Dump Load Controller for a Hydro Electric Turbine (ELC)

  • System was designed to regulate the turbine frequency (rotation speed) to 50 to 60Hz.
  • It used a series of dump loads (heater elements and light bulbs) to dump the excess energy in order for the turbine to not spin to fast or to slow.
  • The system also included safety and lockout relays to protect the turbine and load the turbine was designed to power.


 

AC fail and low battery alarm and status indicator for 12vDC gate system for A-Media

  • Unit was designed to prevent the systems backup battery from going flat.
  • Unit can be used on house hold alarm systems / drive way gates / garage doors / and almost any other system that uses a backup battery.
  • Sounds alarm and flashes status light to indicate that AC has failed and the system is now running on the battery backup.
  • Sounds alarm and flashes status light to indicate that the backup battery is running low.
  • System has reset button to silence buzzer.

Development & prototyping of 12vDC Day/Night switch with MiSolar

  • Runs on 12vDC power unlike regular off the shelf AC units so can be battery / solar powered
  • Adjustable on off ambient light level as well as on off delay time

Development & prototyping of 12vDC Temperature switch with MiSolar

  • Runs on 12vDC power so can be battery / solar powered
  • Adjustable on off temperature threshold as well as on off delay time

Development and prototyping of 12vDC solar charger and light controller (MiBox) with MiSolar

  • Runs on 12v lead acid battery and solar panel.
  • Uses 4 Stage micro controller based charge method – Boost / High absorption / Low absorption and float stages.
  • Turns LED light (output) on at sunset.
  • Turns LED light (output) off after user defined time has lapsed – set using dip switches.
  • Turns LED light (output) off if the battery reaches low levels.
  • Turns LED light (output) off at sunrise.
  • Unit uses 2 status LEDs to display battery voltage and charge stage.

Development and prototyping of 12vDC mini battery system (MiHome) with MiSolar

  • Runs on 12v lead acid battery and solar panel.
  • Uses 4 Stage micro controller based charge method – Boost / High absorption / Low absorption and float stages.
  • Has 6 segment LED bar to indicate battery level and charge stage.
  • Includes 5vDC USB output circuitry for charging mobile phones etc.
  • Uses low voltage protection to disable outputs in battery low status.

Interior lighting and TV on architectural model with Boyd Models

  • LED Down and up lighting as well as under ceiling.
  • Miniature lamps and chandeliers.
  • Miniature TV set to play video clip.

Plastic extruder project with ThingKing

  • Principal is to be able to take old used plastic products and scraps and create new usable items with the old plastic by melting it and extruding it in to new products.
  • System heats up to temperature set by a knob.
  • System then drives screw at speed set by a knob to drive the molten plastic out the extruder nozzle.
  • Extruded plastic is then used to create new product.

Dimable lighting in architectural models with Boyd Models

  • Installing dimmable LED lighting in architectural models.
  • Each Set of buildings is dimmable independently.

Digital Fridge and Freezer controller with LCD display.

  • Unit uses 2 digital temp sensors, one in the freezer and one in the fridge.
  • Temperature is read from the sensors and displayed on the LCD display.
  • Using knobs once can adjust the ideal temperature of both the fridge and freezer.
  • System then controls the fridges compressor and fan to maintain the fridge and freezers temperatures.
  • System was put together to test / develop ways to run refrigerators more efficiently.

Converse Truck with ThingKing

  • Large LED message board – built down the side of container with custom message programming and strobing / scrolling patterns.
  • CCTV cameras inside truck – several CCTV cameras wired to old TV sets inside truck
  • Red button camera – by pushing a red button a solenoid pulls an arm on the cameras shutter button taking the picture.
  • Strobing star and chevron pattern – strobing / scrolling pattern using LEDs.

Mini alarm Circuit

This mini alarm circuit was custom built for a client.  It consisted of a single zone, the zone can be wired to a door magnet, PIR or any other kind of sensor.  The circuit has a relay output which could be connected to a siren, light or another alarm etc.  It has a status LED which shows if the zone is open, closed and if the alarm is armed, disarmed or has gone off.  It also runs on 12Vdc so, could be used on a battery eg. in a car or solar powered system etc.

Vertigo Store Stand with ThingKing

  • Strobing light box- strobing LEDs
  • Motorized curtain inside caravan – curtain opens for a half a minute and then closes again, this process loops every 10 minutes.

Stimorol Party with ThingKing

  • Shadow box – a wooden frame covered in white fabric with 4 lights (one for each wall) that strobe in a circular direction casting shadows on the walls opposite the light.
  • Alien detector -an aluminum frame covered in white fabric with strobing lights and siren in each unit that is triggered by a remote.
  • Alien war game – hacked kids gun with laser mounted in the barral and sound module both wired up to the trigger.

BOS vending machine with ThingKing

  • Screens – 2 cctv cameras looking at the workings of the vending machine and displayed on two small screens
  • Lights – lights fade on and off in different colours – sensor pics up sound in coin track when someone inserts a coin and triggers pulsing of LED lights, LEDs then go back to fading once can has dispensed.
  • Sound – contact mics picup sounds made by the vending machine (motors and gears, falling coins and cans) and play it though 2 speakers. Once can is dispensed, alien voice says “Enjoy your BOS ICEed Tea human”.

Prototype LED Break and Indicator lights for Beetle

This was a prototype for a replacement to a Beetle tail light, it includes: indicator, tail and break lights.

Technologies and skills used: soldering, led stips, 12 volt regulator circuit using L7812 IC.


 

Toyota – Tweet for Sweets with ThingKing

  • A gumball is dispensed by hacked / motorized gumball dispenser,  the gumball falls down tube and rolls down the track and is then blocked by the heel of a shoe.  After a delay, the shoe kicks out, hitting shakers and letting the gum ball falls into the track below.  Rolling down track, the gumball hits a coin switch which tuns on cars conveyor belt for a while, gumball lands on the conveyor belt and is pushed off the back of the conveyor belt.  Gumball then goes though sequence of xylophones and other elements.  Once the gumball reaches the bottom it triggers another coin switch which turns on a lifting belt as well as plays a keyboard, turns on a glitter ball and smoke machine for a time.  Gumball lands in the rubber lift mechanism and gets lifted back to the top while music is played on the keyboard, while glitter ball and smoke are happening.   When the gumball reaches the top of the lift, it falls off the top and into a funnel, triggering another coin switch which activates a hacked Polaroid camera and shows a picture of a cat for a time.  Gumball then rolls out of sight and returns out a hole lower down, the gumball then triggers another switch, turning on spinning visual.  Finally gumball rolls out though a sequence of switches that push on collapsing toys and then lands in a trough for the taking.

Toyota Etios with ThingKing

  • Powerful IR emitter array – mounted at at the front of the car pointing to the pavement.
  • Bins popping open with balloons and colour – an IR receiver picks up the car approaching, circuit then sends signals using wires and wireless signals to bins on both sides of the road.  Pin is then pulled on bin lid using solenoid and lid opens up letting out balloons.
  • Cannons firing – an IR receiver picks up the car approaching, circuit then sends signals using wires and wireless signals to cannons air release valves on both sides of the road letting off balls and ribbons.
  • Things lifting – an IR receiver picks up the car, circuits then sends signal to solenoid which pulls pin.  Weight then drops pulling elements attached to a sting into the air.

Toyota RAV4 with ThingKing

  • The winking eye and The opening window and windmill – when the feature button is pressed a signal is sent, using geared motors, switches and cables the eye lid and window open and close in tracks.
  • The Cogs and Crane – when the feature button is pressed either both or one set of cogs are set into action, this also has the crane lift a banner.

Lipton Floating Vending Machine with ThingKing

  • Swim out to the raft, push a button, water squirts in your face, a GoPro takes several pictures of you getting squirted.  Finally you get an Ice Tea.

Lipton Tea-mometor with ThingKing

  • Vending machine – receives signal from heart rate monitor, dispenses 1, 2 or 3 drinks, next cans slide down, once a column of cans is empty wedge unit moves back until next row of cans roll into place.

Mechanicard with ThingKing

  • Aggreko mechanicard mailer – was meant to display work productivity in a cold vs hot environments, when it is hot there are less items on the conveyor belt and when it is cold there are more items on the conveyor belt.  The task was to design, prototype and produce 300 + units.  All parts were laser cut out of Birch plywood and paperboard, then assembled using glue and pin nails.

WWF Journey of Water with ThingKing

  • Opening tap does not let out water – instead, magnets in the tap trigger switches which tell circuit if tap is being opened or closed.  If tap is being opened a pump is turned on, this pump pumps water up into the clouds.  This water then rains down though the sequence of elements.  Some elements react to water using delays in circuit. Finally when water reaches the end of the filtration system a stop cock is opened letting water from a drinking water container flow out though the tap.  The rain water is returned back into the rain water container to wait to be pumped back up to the cloud next time the tap is opened.  The system runs on a battery and is solar powered.

Mohair Bicycle with ThingKing

  • This bicycle was mounted on a stand with its back wheel in the air.  It had an old 12V gate motor pushing on the back wheel.  When the bicycle was peddled the back wheel would spin the gate motor which would act as a generator.  The power generated was used to charge a battery though a custom built charge / voltage controller.  There was also an amp meter mounted on the bicycle the the person peddling could see how much current they were producing – you could get 10A at a good push which is around 100watts. The battery then powered an electric knitting machine via an inverter.
